Choosing a Gemini Server
So after two days of playing around with Gemini I'm already toying with the idea of running my own Gemini Server. I started with flounder.online, which I have to say is an awesome way to get started with Gemini. It gives you all you need right out of the box to get started, including simple in browser site management.
That being said, the idea of Gemini is to be curious, so of course that means going out there and looking what other options exist. The best list of Gemini resources I found on Awesome Gemini
Not knowing anything I went thought the list of servers there and these are the ones from the list that look interesting. All I did was read the README and check they had recent commits.
Note
I have no idea if they are actually any good as I am yet to test any of them.
Potential Gemini server list
- Agate: Tested on localhost, so far seems to be the easiest to use. Automatic TLS cert generation. Nice directory listing (e.g. skips ".." file), and you need to explicitly activate it per directory.
- a-h: Some testing on localhost, easy to run single executable, not really happy with the "list everything in the directory" behaviour
- Ergol: Looks promising, has gemini and https served pages, but I don't want to mess with PHP
- gmid
- Jetforce: Python, which I like. I tried to get it to run on Windows 10 (maybe not the best idea) for testing, and it asked for MSBuild 14.0 tools to build and install requirements. Currently I'm favouring the servers with precompiled binaries
- twins
Additional interesting server if you want to run a gemini wiki:
Note
This post was originally hosted on a Gemini Capsule, but have since moved back to the web, because ironically it's just easier.
